Clothing Expectations

for Men and Woman

Halal and Haram Clothings

Expectations for woman
Women in the Muslim community cover their hair and their body with loose clothing for modesty, to be respected and not be molested.
Veils are not compulsory in Islam unless a girl’s beauty (without makeup) is too attractive for men. In islam, covering isn't just the islam code of dress, it is about protecting, covering what allah purified within you.

“O children of Adam! We have indeed sent down to you clothing to cover your shame, and (clothing) for beauty and clothing that guards (against evil), that is the best. This is of the communications of Allah that they may be mindful.

Al-Qur’an · Surah A’raf · Ayah 26

What is considered to be haram

It is concidered Haram to wear skin tight clothing or see through, it is like drawing attention to certain parts of you body by the clothes your wear that is shaping it. Clothing should not be so glamerous that it may attract the opposite sex or resemble the clothing of the unbeliever or the opposite sex (Zakir Naik, 2014).

Woman must cover their body except for their face and hands from non-Mahram men; it is haram for woman to show their bodies to a non- mahram. The overall appearance of a person should be dignified and modest. Shiny, flashy clothing may be considered haram as it defeat the purpose of overall modesty.Behaviors and Manners,Islamic clothing is but one aspect of modesty. More importantly, one must be modest in behavior, manners, speech and appearance in public. Dress is only one aspect of the total being, and merely reflects what is present on the inside of a person's heart.

Expectations for Men
Just like women are expected to cover, so are muslim men in islam. They should cover themselves from the navel to the knees.According to muslim, it is haraam for males to wear silk or gold. They should concider wearing loose clothing .

What is considered to be haram

Scholars agreed that it is haraam to wear pure silk, because of the hedeeth of Ali ibn Taalib (R.A), who said that  the prophet took a piece of silk in his right hand and a piece of gold in his left , held them aloft and said "Theses are haram for males of the ummah and permitted for the females."(Ibn Maajah, 2/1189). In the hadith of Ibn Umar (RA), who reported that the prophet (pbuh) said:"Silk is only worn in this world by the one who will have no share of the pleasure of the Heareafter (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 5832). One may include that they are not to wear anything too thin, too tight, or see through clothing that shows their private body parts or does not conceal the awrah. It is also haraam to imitate the mushrikeen and kuffaar in their manner of dress, so it is not permissible to wear clothing that is unique to the kuffaar.Islam conciders it haraam for women to imitate men and men to imitate women in the way they dress, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) cursed the men who imitate women and the women who imitate men.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 5546. (Islamqa,2015)

“O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks (veil) all over their bodies. That will be better, that they should be known (as free respectable women) so as not to be annoyed. And Allah is ever Forgiving,  Most Merciful” (33:59)
